The town has a rich history in horticulture, both in developing fungicides and developing new techniques for cultivating under glass. Thomas Rochford had a large concern here, however most of this land has been re-developed for housing. There are still greenhouses to the west of the town and in neighbouring towns. Cheshunt benefits from mature lakes as a result of sand and gravel extraction, this in turn attracts a wide selection of wildlife.
