Hertford, the county town of Hertfordshire since Saxon times, has a population of around 27,000. References to Hertford go back as far as 731AD which refers to Herutford. Herut is the old English spelling for hart, meaning a fully mature stag, the ford part of the name would refer to the ford where these stags are found. A different spelling of Hertford is found in the Domesday book in 1086 of Hertforde. Hertford dates back to the 10th Century and is situated at the convergence of four rivers. At the writing of the Domesday book in 1068, Hertford was thriving with two churches, two markets and three mills. Hertford castle was built by the Normans, this was then rebuilt by King Henry in 1216 in stone.
