In the seventeenth century, Waltham Abbey had a gunpowder factory, this was later sold to the government in 1787. It was a centre for explosive research over the years and was a target during World War II. The Royal Gunpowder Mills are now a tourist attraction promoting education for families. The other attraction is of course Waltham Abbey Church itself, which is still used as a parish church. English Heritage look after the Midnight Chapel, the gatehouse, a vaulted passage and Harolds Bridge. Notable for the grave of Harold II, the last Anglo-saxon king of England.
