Barking is historically an ancient parish of Essex, whereas it is not a suburban town in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. Fishing was originally the main industry in the area, however this changed from fishing and farming to market gardening and industrial development. Barking had a railway station since 1854 and has an underground station since 1908. In the early 20th century Barking saw substantial urban growth with the expansion of London Country Council estate at Becontree. The phrase ‘barking’, for barking mad, is often attributed to the existence of a medieval insane asylum attached to Barking Abbey. Although a more likely a comparison between an insane person and a mad dog.
Our waste collection and disposal services are for commercial businesses in the South East of England, including London and the home counties. All waste is transported directly to fully licensed transfer stations – nothing sent direct to landfill.

Fishing was the most important industry for around 500 years from the 14th century until the mid 19th century. Cod was a major catch with fishing boats sailing as far as Iceland in the summer months. As boats changed and they stayed out at sea for longer period of times, ice was needed to preserve the catch. This was created by flooding local fields in the winter.
