Hertford, the county town of Hertfordshire since Saxon times, has a population of around 27,000. References to Hertford go back as far as 731AD which refers to Herutford. Herut is the old English spelling for hart, meaning a fully mature stag, the ford part of the name would refer to the ford where these stags are found.
