About Hornchurch

Hornchurch is a town located in East London, in the London borough of Havering. Its name is derived from the Latin Monasterium Cornutum, meaning Church with horn-like gables and it was recoded as Hornechurch in 1233. There is a horned bulls head at the eastern end of St Andrews church that dates from the 18th century. Interestingly 450,000 years ago the Ice sheet reached as far south as ‘The Dell’ just south of St Andrews Church, this is the furthest an ice sheet has ever reached. Tools and artefacts from the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age have all been discovered in Hornchurch. Hornchurch as we know it now was a gift of 1,500 acres from Henry II to the hospice of St Nicholas and St Bernard in the 12th century. The monks were forced out of their monastery in 14th century when a new law banned foreign land ownership. Lord Chancellor William of Wykeham renovated the church and endowed it to New College, Oxford who still owns all the local church lands and buildings.

There are many things to do in Hornchurch and different places to eat.
